Origin and Provenance

Written in Ireland or in an Irish centre on the Continent. Rewritten in the eleventh century, probably in the abbey of St Eucharius and St Matthias near Trier: the twelfth-century ex-libris 'Libellus sancti Eucharii primi Treuirorum archiepiscopi sanctique Mathie apostoli; quem si quis abstulerit anathema sit' stands on fol. 1. The manuscript came into the possession of D. Hermes after the dispersion of the library and was presented by him to the public library in 1827.
